Fixing a Leaking Bucket

Post  Backlash on Fri Jan 14, 2011 11:29 am

Last night, I began reading reading over the 2010 Special Report on Fishing and Boating from the RBFF and it paints a pretty disturbing picture of participation in the sport. Their study which runs from 2000 until 2009 is a sort of Good News/ Bad News scenario. The bad news is that fishing is losing more participants than it is creating or that are returning to the sport. The good new is that the rate of loss may be decreasing. Still, the RBFF is describing the situation as, Leaky Bucket.

One area being heavily discussed is the accelerated loss of participation in the fly fishing segment, which lost 1.1 million anglers over the 9 year period. Interesting to me , as I would have thought with the increase of the amount of affordable quality fly tackle now available that participation would have been on the increase in fly fishing.

Their final projections predict that the level of participation in fishing will remain the same over the next five years, however if you factor the certain population increase it will surely mean a decrease of anglers.

The link below is to the full report. Take a look and let us know what you think.
