Post  crappieassassin on Fri Feb 03, 2012 10:44 am

Hey guys me and my brother james are planning our first saltwater trip of the year for our first ever reds down at ft fisher, we are planning on takin the mad river and heading towards buzzard bay or some where in that vicinity. now with that being said we went and got some 4in gulp shrimp in white and new penny and some pogys in white and new penny and got the 1/8th oz jig heads from walmart, should we be takin bottom rigs to and will the current be an issue im going to get the boat registered this weekend and puttin a trolling motor on will that help me out alot or will it not matter when tides going out also i was looking at google earth and just wondering if i should just fish the creeks heading towards buzzard bay and not hit buzzard bay directly thanks guys and any info on whice creek to take first would be greatly appriciated im not looking to steal anyone fishing spot just want to get my 1st red thanks guys

These are a few of the places I like to fish down there,

Here are two places that when there is a moving current the are really good. Especially the last two hours of an out going tide. But be careful the current is very strong through here when the tide gets moving. You can beach on the sand bar just to the right of where I market good at low tide, casting into the channel.

I have never been all the way to Buzzards bay but all of the creek head in there are good with the moving tide, The fall tide being the best.

Your Gulp will work good might want to have some 3/8 jig heads also for the stronger current areas. I would also take Mirror lures like the MR18, Mr17,S51MR and any color you want as long as it is Electric Chicken,, or with a orange bottom.

Good Luck and post up the pics when you get back.

Eddie is right on with the advice. I'd add a Johnson minnow in Gold for the sloughs (Reds like gold) and the orange belly mirrolures with gold sides are coded 808 color for the MR17's and others.

Here's a link to the tides: http://www.saltwatertides.com/dynamic.dir/ncarolinasites.html

Use Reaves Point for the closest data, but the backwaters still lag behind the main channel by up to an hour. Follow the rock wall to the end and take the first channnel. It is the main thoroughfare and you will see other boats run thru there. Moving down you can take the first and third sloughs to the left, but the second is very shallow. If you pass by all three, keep going until you see a big platform and turn left to buzzard bay, but you'll be passing up some really good fishing on the way.

Watch the tides! Boat don't float well on oyster bars, and the muck is knee deep. Stay too long and you'd better have a lunch packed. I take my 18 footer in there, but watch the water level. You can always fish the outside of the rock wall until the water moves in. Trout and flounder love the wall. Good luck!
