Specs closed till Jun 15th

Post  Deepblu505 on Mon Feb 03, 2014 4:14 pm

Got this today thought it might interest ya'll.

Tim Hergenrader timraderart@yahoo.com via listserv.nstelco.com

[ltr]AS many of you know, the trout population took a serious blow from the cold weather.  As a consequence, the DMF has closed the season on specs until June 15.  No one, rec nor commercial can legally take specs effectiveWednesday, Feb. 5 at noon.  Fish houses will have until Feb 12 to get rid of their unfrozen specs taken before the closure.

Many of you are also aware that the CFRG has led the fish to get game fish for specs.  So far that effort has been unsuccessful.  But that doesn't mean the effort is dead, nor does it mean the fish don't deserve game fish status.  Attached is a spec fact sheet that stresses  until the demise of the grey trout, the specs were not important to the commercial sector.

The spotted sea trout has always been a major target of recreational fishermen and is our most sought after inland fish.

The CFRG supports game fish status for specs, red drum and inland striped bass.  Please speak up when the time comes for these fish.  We need immense  grass roots support if we ever hope to achieve game fish.

Spotted seatrout – (Cynoscion nebulosus)

Distribution: Spotted seatrout (speckled trout) are found from Virginia south to Florida and along the Gulf coast to Texas.

Life Span: Spotted seatrout can live to be 10 years old or older though most caught on a regular basis are four to five years old.

Recreational Value: In North Carolina the spotted seatrout is the most valuable coastal fish to the recreational industry. More money is spent by rec anglers in pursuit of this popular trout than any other coastal species.

Commercial Value: It is a known fact that the spotted seatrout has never been a commercially dependable fish in North Carolina. Although available year round they are not targeted until late fall and throughout the winter when congregated in coastal streams. What has been the trout of choice through the years is the grey trout (weakfish). Currently their stock status is considered depleted in North Carolina coastal waters.

Inshore guys are going to be disappointed but when I see some of the flat out unethical exploitation of the creeks out there it's nice to see something done to protect the resource.  Enforcement is going to be another issue all together.

Problem is they still can put their nets out to catch flounder and reds but any specs have to be thrown back , of course they will be dead by then so who is going to make a difference  ....the rec guys, we will catch them and release them alive . Mad
